Bacchus smiled upon the Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts of the Northwest Region. Fourteen cars from British Columbia, Washington, California, and Alberta, enjoyed a glorious weekend of sunny weather and scenic drives in BC’s Okanagan Wine Country. A big thanks to our US visitors and old friends who came so far to join us. Also, a special mention for Joe Peck who drove up from Los Angeles, and Jake and Ria Schutter who joined us from Alberta for their first MBCA event. Joseph Anthony once again arranged a wonderful driving tour, interspersed with casual stops to sample the region’s wineries and food venues. This year, we were based out of the Ramada Inn in Penticton, the heart of White Wine Country. The Naramata Bench and surrounding area, is well-known for its Chardonnays, clean Pinot Grigios, and ‘off-dry’ Rieslings and Gewürztraminers. It goes without saying, we tried them all. Winter was long, cold and wet this year. However, Saturday morning as we set off, it was already sunny. The SL tops were all down as we followed the directions of Joseph’s famed ‘Michelin Guide’, along the shores of Okanagan Lake to the 8th Generation Winery. From there, we made our way to the Saxon Estate Winery in Summerland. Jayne and Paul Graydon were our welcoming hosts. We enjoyed Jayne’s chat and tasting, then posed our cars for photos in the adjoining field. Leigh Gayman found he had wet feet after trying to take a ‘short cut’ back onto the road. Not to worry though, lunch with a glass of wine was not too far away, at Little Straw Vineyards. Our group was treated to a light, but delicious tapas style buffet in the Barrel Top Grill, overlooking the vineyard. After lunch we split into two groups to visit the Kettle Valley Winery and the eccentric and entertaining Ruby Blues Winery, with its trademark ‘hippy’ VW bus and custom designed shoes! Our day ended with a relaxed dinner at the Poplar Grove Winery’s Vanilla Pod Restaurant. Perched on the hill in Naramata, our patio dinner tables held a breathtaking view of Penticton and the lake below. Joseph, and Section President Sean Clark, drew for prizes for some lucky dinner guests. Our thanks to Vancouver’s Mercedes-Benz Retail Group, who donated a Mercedes keepsake gift for each participant, as well as a very generous Door Prize for our dinner. Sunday morning was relaxed too, as some left early for home or other destinations. The ‘survivors’ made their way south to See Ya Later Ranch. Located some distance off the main highway, this drive offered some of the most scenic roads. We took another opportunity at the ‘Ranch for some fun photos, with our cars and the group. Lastly, we gathered for lunch near the border, at Convivia Restaurant in Osoyoos. Local Member, Denis Roberge, joined us for lunch. Reluctantly, we parted our ways for our long drives home. Our first hot and sunny weekend was a welcome start to the summer. Joseph will have a hard time topping this latest success. Photo credits: Ian Gleadle, Bob Willetts, Joseph Anthony
